Restoring Connection: Healing Sexuality Disrupted by Past Trauma
This workshop will offer a practical strategy for psychotherapy with couples suffering from sexual difficulties and impasses due to histories of trauma. Effective work with these challenging cases involves a clear understanding of the impact of trauma and dissociation on the mind, brain and body; and how this impact constellates and manifests in relationship and sexuality. The workshop will define and describe what constitutes traumatic experience, broadening and updating participants’ understanding from the original 1980 PTSD diagnosis. Participants will learn to recognize trauma’s unique resultant individual and interpersonal dynamics, how to interrupt and heal them, and how to recreate or introduce love and loving, pleasurable sexuality. The approach will be didactic, interactive and experiential, integrating Attachment Theory; State-of-the-Art Trauma Theory, research and practice; Neuroscience, and ample case material in narrative and client video. The intention is that participants leave the workshop equipped, inspired and confident to shepherd couples through these complex and painful difficulties.
